How to find a lawyer in specific area of your needs.

Lawyers to Avoid

Unfortunately, through the years the legal profession has gained a less than perfect reputation.  In point of fact, there are some lawyers that a person would be well advised to avoid if he or she is looking for capable and reliable legal representation.  When looking for a lawyer, there are some warning signs that you should keep in mind, some warning signs that should point to lawyers that you should avoid.

Lawyers that Get Bad References, Reviews

One of the steps that you really must take when you are searching for legal representation --whether you are looking for a defense lawyer, a personal injury lawyer, an adoption lawyer (or any other type of attorney) -- you need to obtain references and recommendations.  If you find a lawyer that consistently receives low marks from people who have used his or her services in the past, it goes without saying that this is an attorney that you need to avoid.

You do need to keep in mind that in many instances a client is not perfectly satisfied with his or her lawyer.  When a person seeks legal assistance, it normally is at a point of time in that person’s life when all is not well.  Thus, a former client’s perceptions of a lawyer may be a bit overly harsh.  In other words, while you should avoid a lawyer who is consistently panned, do be thoughtful about what people say in regard to a lawyer’s performance.

Lawyers that Have Had Numerous Disciplinary Problems

Lawyers that practice in the United States are granted licenses from the Supreme Court of a particular state.  The Supreme Court in turn supervises a lawyer and establishes an office to watch over lawyers that are practicing law in a given state.

If a lawyer violates the rules of professional responsibility, a case will be opened with the administrative office that oversees the conduct of lawyers in a given state.  Before you engage the services of a lawyer you should contact the agency in your state that oversees the conduct of lawyers in your state.

Generally speaking, these offices can tell you whether or not a lawyer has received multiple complaints with that office -- complaints in which a determination has been made that a lawyer has violated the rules of professional responsibility.

Lawyers that Make Grandiose Promises

Another type of lawyer that you should avoid is the attorney who makes grandiose promises.  Indeed, if a lawyer promises a particular outcome for your case (rather than making qualified predictions about what possibly might happen in your case) you should avoid such a lawyer. Lawyers ethically are prohibited from making guarantees about the outcome of a case.

By keeping these tips and pointers in mind, you will be able to avoid those lawyers who will not serve your interests well.  You will be on the course to finding a lawyer that will best meet and serve your legal interests.
