Proposed Changes in Immigration Laws
America has always prided itself in accepting good hard working immigrants into the country, giving them the opportunity to work and live the American dream. President Bush has outlined a proposal to make some changes to the current laws, allowing immigrants who are already working in America, the opportunity to get legal status as temporary workers.
Understanding the Provisions Relating to Temporary Workers
Workers who are illegally working in USA can join a temporary work program if they already have a job. A temporary work program will last for three years and can be updated once more, allowing immigrants to work in the USA for up to six years legally.
Immigrants will have the opportunity to visit their own country on holiday and still be able to return back to USA and continue working. After this six-year period the immigrants will have to return to their home country. If during this time the worker loses their job, or breaks the law they will be sent home.
Workers who have joined the temporary workers program can apply for residency, although they will not be given any preference to other immigrants wanting to come into the country. Congress proposes that they will increase the Greencard limit to 140,000 per year to allow for this.
Employers and the Immigration Laws
Employers wanting to hire immigrants on the work program will have to fist prove that they were not able to find US laborers to fill the positions, before hiring immigrants. Once hired the workers will receive full wages, rights and benefits given to any other employee in the USA.
President Bush believes that these new proposed laws would help increase border security. It will also make it easier to account for those who are in the country, and give law enforcement more opportunity to deal with real threats, such as criminals and terrorists.
The Controversy
The various proposals relating to immigration laws in the United States continue to be controversial. In short, there appears to be no easy nor quick solution to the problem of dealing with illegal immigration in the United States. Indeed, this is expected to be a major issue on the American political scene well into the future.
