Working with Your Attorney:
Keep a Written Record

If you  have hired an attorney -- whether it be a personal injury lawyer, a disability lawyer, a business lawyer or some other type of attorney -- it is important that you take any and all steps necessary to aid your attorney in your legal representation.  Indeed, in cases in which a client is of no help there tends to be a less than favorable result.  While you do hire a lawyer to aid you in a case, that does not mean that you can take a completely hands off approach to your legal matters.  One step that you will want to take to aid your lawyer in his or her representation of you is to keep a written record.

Keep a Written Record During the Course of Your Representation

Once you hire a lawyer, do not think that you are off the hook in regard to working on your case or your legal matter.  You need to stay actively involved in your case in order to ensure that you end up with the best, most favorable result when all is said and done.

One way that you can assist your lawyer during the course of your representation is to keep a written record even after the representation commences.  By keeping a written record you will be in a far better position to provide your lawyer with accurate and useful information that is important to your case or legal situation.

Keep a Written Record if You Feel You May be Headed to a Legal Problem

If you have not yet reached a position at which you have retained a lawyer to assist you in regard to a legal matter, but if you have reached a crossroads at which you think you are heading into a legally problematic situation, you will want to begin to keep a written record.

Take, by way of an example, an employment situation.  Imagine that you believe that you are being discriminated against in the workplace.  If you feel this is occurring, you will want to begin documenting everything that is going on that is relevant to your belief that you are being subjected to discrimination.  In other words, you will want to keep a written record.

Courts put a great deal of weight on what is known as contemporaneous documentation.  If you keep a written record of events at the time they transpire, you will end up with a most invaluable document should you ever end up in a position at which you need to take legal action.
